Integrative Narrative
When I first came to CSUMB I was like many other students, undecided. It took me a very long time before I knew what I should dedicate my life to. Because of the many adversities faced in my past, my personal goals were something I neglected to think about before. Eventually, the answer presented itself quite obviously and I have yet to understand why it has taken so long for me to realize it.
At a young age, I translated court documents for my mother and for people we met during our stays in shelters that protected domestic violence victims. Thankfully, I learned English and Spanish fluently and have never struggled in expressing myself in either language. I have translated countless letters addressed to district attorneys and lawyers that were taking advantage of peoples lack of knowledge. I never said no to any of my mother’s requests or to the request of her acquaintances that needed help. I knew how important it was to be the bridge of communication and understanding between these women, their lawyers, and even some of the shelter staff. The simple task of translating made a difference in custody battles, restraining orders and even pressuring lawyers into doing their job more efficiently. It is for these reasons, upon completing my degree, I intend to become a translator with the ultimate goal of working with letters and documents for people that do not have the resources needed to learn or understand English. Ultimately I plan to translate in courtrooms.
This major has given me many tools and resources that I know I will benefit me so that I can use them in future professional settings. Being able to practice my communication skills in Spanish and to better articulate my thoughts will most definitely benefit my ability to translate in the target language. My writing skills will continue to improve with practice, but in the meantime I believe to have achieved an acceptably proficient level of writing that instead of impeding my skills, it will demonstrate my competence for my career of choice.
I’m very grateful for all of the material that was taught within my Spanish major. From being taught how to improve my communication skills, learning and analyzing Hispanic history, literature and literary movements, culture, and the structure of the language itself. Most of my learning experiences have been an enjoyable one due to all of the interesting subjects that I have been exposed to through out the years. In turn this experience has made it easier for me to internalize much of the work that I have done so far. This has been beneficial for my outcome across all MLO’s because it means that I have successfully reached each outcome that was intended for me to achieve.
With mixed feelings I have to say that I was most proud of completing my Capstone project and being able to achieve studying abroad in Spain. Cumulatively all of my courses have helped me to gain new perspectives and intellectual strengths that have helped me become the successful Spanish major I am today. I was able to prove to myself and others that I am able to gather knowledge, analyze it, and present it in a way that supports any main idea of significance. This all contributes to in attaining experience and abilities that can be applied to almost all future careers paths relating to this major. Meanwhile, studying abroad has completely changed my life by exposing myself to a different cultural experience. I have managed to see through the eyes of immigrants, speak to people within the community, and learn so much first hand that it has inspired me to continue my educational pursuit in languages while reaching my goals for becoming a translator and eventually working in international affairs. I’m grateful for having been given the opportunity to study abroad and graduate with the support of CSUMB, the World Languages and Cultures staff, and Global Studies staff.
