Course Summary
This course was under the instruction of profesor Heike Clara Pintor Pizcall and taught in English. The course was geared towards my global studies minor and was a course meant to fulfill an International Affairs and Translation double major requirement. Many of the students in the class were Spanish students whom have gained a proficient or advanced level in English. The course focused on many different topics regarding peaceful non-violent movements, peace studies, peace-building, peace education, transitional justice & reconciliation, political advancement through peace keeping and so on. In the beginning of the course we went over ideologies that helped shape civil disobedience in non-violent protests around the world. Examples used included Women's suffragist movement, Civil-rights movement, India's salt march, and the Velvet revolution. Here we analyzed what methods of peaceful action took place to create political change. Later we focused on different cases studies through out the world where the League of Nations was involved and investigated what made the organization successful and what caused it to fail. Other case studies included the United Nations, the Hague Conventions and Paris Peace accords in order to understand how these organizations came to be and how they have been effective in establishing peace. The establishment of peace is dynamic and requires both short term and long term strategies to maintain it. Using what we've learned in the class, our final project was to research in groups and present a country that has suffered a regime or conflict. Afterwards we would explain whether they have successfully obtained peace in the given region and critically analyze what could have been done or what can be done now to establish long term peace. For my groups case study, we focused on the Cambodian genocide and the research report can be found below.
