Course Summary
In this course, profesor Pablo Oliva provided the class with multiple assignments that included reading, writing and speaking exercises. We focused on bettering our grammar and went over rules of the Spanish language such as punctuation, accents and past, present and future tense of words. While having reviewed this information we were expected to apply these rules and write compositions in Spanish. These exercises were helpful because the profesor would correct our work and would tell us how to correct or improve it. It helped the class identify strengths and weaknesses in their writing ability while also being guided towards stronger writing techniques. Later on in the class we were asked to write a news report about a current event that was of interest while later sharing it with the class, another exercise that helped improve our ability. We also watched Spanish films in class such as Cautiva by Gaston Biraben and demonstrated our comprehension skills by writing reflections about the film and answering questions.
The class was very engaging and there were multiple approaches used to guide us making it more interesting. Not one exercise was like the other which made it helpful to constantly adapt to new situations while also trying to apply what we have learned. In turn this made the activities unique in their own way and easier to learn from. In completing the course, we were asked to work in groups while choosing a research topic of interest to present to the class as a demonstration of our ability to speak in Spanish. For my topic, my partner and I conducted research about cattle raising and its effects on the environment. This topic was interesting because we encountered many new terms that we were unfamiliar with in Spanish. After completing our research we were able to confidently explain concepts in Spanish while also advocating for alternative measures to cattle raising.
