Course Summary
Capstone and Pre-Capstone provided me with an experience that helped me learn to share and demonstrate my ability to use technology while supporting my scholarly work. Through Capstone I gained the ability to gather, organize, and analyze sources while using appropriate techniques to share this information in both written and oral form. Although there may be other great research examples within other courses that I have taken in the past, Capstone was the most significant project that required me to use and apply all of my learned skills through out my student career here at CSUMB. It required, focus, self discipline and critical analysis while also collaborating with my partner Heather.
This experience was very beneficial to my confidence in conducting research. Beforehand, research projects always intimidated me because I felt that I had not learned enough on how to properly conduct it. There were many knowledge gaps in my papers that would often effect my grade on the assignment, but through Capstone and Pre-Capstone I was given the tools necessary to change this and reinforce my understanding on how to properly conduct and present my research. A great resource was our librarian who had come into the class to explain and teach us on how to better conduct research using available tools such as the inter-library loan system, and methods of analysis for our research.
Through this course I was also better to grasp how to conduct research in Spanish and to better understand the information that was being extracted from these texts to analyze its content while also being able to apply research conducted in English that could equally be applied to the information found. For my research relating to the Dirty War in Argentina, I had also come across the challenge of finding scholarly articles relating to censored children’s literature, but by asking for questions and help, I was better able to conduct my research and attain the information I needed for the purpose of my Capstone.
Upon presenting, it was necessary to find the best way to share this information in a more simplified way so that our audience can understand what I have researched without them reading the research paper. Working with my partner, and through the support of Gus Leonard, we learned basic tips to keep in mind while constructing a PowerPoint. I may have presented dozens of PowerPoints beforehand but through this guidance, we were better able to create something that would leave no room for misunderstandings or confusion on the information being presented.
